Storage methods for engines in different states

Storage of Unassembled New Engines

Ø Preparation of New Engines Received from Chongqing Cummins for Long-Term Storage

1. Apply light lubricant or rust inhibitor to unpainted machined surfaces.

2. Apply light lubricant or rust inhibitor to any visible, unpainted internal cast surfaces (such as coolant inlet and outlet connections).

3. Seal all engine and component openings with clean protective caps, heavy paper and tape to prevent dirt and moisture from entering the engine.

4. Remove all external drive belts.

5. Install appropriate desiccants on the engine to absorb any moisture.

6. Cover the entire engine with a plastic sheet.

7. Move the engine or equipment to a suitable storage area.

(1) The storage area must be dry and have a uniform temperature. The recommended storage temperature is between -12°C (10°F) and 49°C (120°F), with a relative humidity below 60%.

Long-Term Storage of Used Engines

Ø For Engines Installed in Equipment

1. Change the engine oil.

2. Replace the engine oil filter.

3. Verify that the cooling system is filled with fully formulated, approved coolant.

4. Use the Fleetguard® Coolant Test Kit CC2602 to measure the concentration of Supplemental Coolant Additive (SCA) and adjust as necessary.

5. Inspect the coolant quality annually during storage.

6. Replace the fuel filter.

7. Verify that the fuel supply line in the fuel tank contains only diesel fuel (0% biodiesel).

8. If any biodiesel is present in the fuel system, it will degrade during storage and damage the system.

9. Start the engine and operate it for 30 minutes until the coolant reaches normal operating temperature.

10. Shut down the engine.

Long-Term Storage of In-Service Engines

Ø If the engine is still installed in equipment but needs to be removed:

1. Verify that the fuel supply in the fuel tank contains only pure diesel fuel (0% biodiesel content).

2. If any biodiesel is present in the fuel system, it will degrade and damage the system during storage.

3. Start the engine and run it for 30 minutes until the coolant reaches normal operating temperature.

Ø If the engine has already been removed from the equipment:

1. Drain the engine oil.

2. Drain the coolant.

3. Apply light lubricant or rust inhibitor to all unpainted machined surfaces.

4. Apply light lubricant or rust inhibitor to any visible, unpainted internal cast surfaces (such as coolant inlet and outlet connections).
